Black widow spiders creep northward

The poisonous black-eyed black widow looks far north than before, scientists have found with the help of crowd photos.

"They are taking on new habitats that we did not think about before," said Wang Yifu, lead author of Canada's new study, The Transition Gap North Black Widow Tracking, perhaps because of climate change.

When they enter a new area, the information will help local and local health officials improve, Wang and colleagues at McGill University and Montreal Insectarium report.

Black Wool Spider North is black with a red sign and sometimes knows slashes on the back, and two red triangles in the stomach to the top and bottom of one hour. (Connected with a south black widow, hourglass.) This habitat is not fussy and can be found among people in places such as backyards, sick farms and under fences, in the eastern part of North America from southern Ontario and Quebec in south to Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.

"Small special species"
Black Widows Spiders rarely bite humans, and their bites are not life-threatening in adults in general, but can cause severe pain and cause painful muscle contractions, according to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

However, it is good for local health practitioners to know how to treat them in the area where spiders occur. But remember what can't be easy, Wang said.

"This is a very small species, so they are very difficult to find," Wang said.

This is one reason why scientists have so far only had a blurry picture of a black widow, mainly based on claims of sightings in several states or districts. There are record numbers between 1960 and 1990 that it is impossible to map the spider sheath safely.

Wang and his colleagues thought they were getting a clearer picture by combining the observations of scientists with images presented by the public on websites and applications dedicated to sharing observations about the natural world.

Given the specificity of the spider, the scenery, which is accompanied by an image, is expected to be "quite reliable," Wang said.

He also visited the Canadian National Insect Collection, Arakhnida and Nematoda, which are operated by Canadas Agricultural and Agri-Foods in Ottawa to collect samples stored in alcohol bottles.

When researchers compared spiders found before 1990 with their expected expectations, it looked like a spider moving far north.
