Prokudin-Gorsky was at the forefront of pioneering color pioneers in the 20th century, using his background as a chemist to take art forms to a new level. A Russian photographer is responsible for a large project that documents his country with color photographs in the early 1900s, which still looks amazing today.

Prokudin-Gorsky was born in Vladimir Oblast on August 30, 1863 in what is now the Kirzhachsky District. Not surprisingly, Prokudin-Gorsky developed significant interests and skills for chemistry when he studied them under the famous chemist Dmitri Mendeleev at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Technology.

It was in Saint Petersburg in the early 1900s that his last photography career, where he taught about the science of photography and studied extensively throughout Europe. He specifically uses three-color photography that produces praise for him, which is a relatively new and interesting format in the world that is used for black and white images.

This is a work of color, and in particular the famous painting Leo Tolstoy (below) received the attention of Tsar Nicholas II who financed Prokudin-Gorsky to produce 10,000 Russian-colored 10-year photographs from 1908.

Prokudin-Gorsky is not the first to use three-color photography as it has been since the 1850s. However, his skill with using it, especially in specially designed dark rooms on the train took him to the forefront of science. Adaptation with the technique also earned him patents throughout Europe.

The basic science behind three-color photography is taking three black and white photos but with red, green and blue filters in each. Adding three images on the screen through another filter or viewed through a special optical device will give color images. Prokudin-Gorsky, together with other practitioners like Adolf Miethe greatly improved this process and created a clear image that they knew.
